Nov. 9th, 2005 09:24 pmShortly before I went to work today, I discovered a voicemail on my phone from my coworker, Jodie, telling me that she wanted to move in if we still had a room available. (If current roommate, Kathy, agrees, this will be a lifesaver, because I am barely making ends meet right now.) Since I was scheduled to work with Jodie, I figured we could work out some details tonight.
Shortly after I got to work today, my manager, Connie told me that Jodie was going to be a few minutes late.
Shortly after that, the phone rang. I was closest, so I answered it.
"This is the Gray police department. I'm calling to inform you that Jodie *lastname* will not be coming into to work today because she has been arrested."
. . .
I have no idea what I said in reply. I really don't. I was too busy going, WTF?! I mean, Jodie's no angel, but she's not the type to go around getting arrested either. I know I didn't ask why, and I'm not sure they would have told me anyway (
amatia? Would they have told me?).
(The look on poor Connie's face, when I told her, aw man. She worked all day and had to come back for the midnight shift, and she thought for a few awful minutes that she was going to have to work second shift too. Happily, Rachel took one look at her face and offered to work a double, so that turned out okay. We are all worried about Connie, as she is overworking herself and losing tons of weight and sick into the bargain, but there's not much we can do about it, you know?)
As it turns out, Jodie's boyfriend came in later and told us that she had been picked up for hitchhiking. Hitchhiking, presumably, to get to work after visiting her sick mom. What rotten shit luck. And as far as I know, she's still in jail because no one has the bail money.
And, oh yeah, there was also the part where, before Connie left, she got just about shoved over at the door by a guy stealing two thirty-packs of Bud. Yeah, she went after him. Connie's a tiny older woman (in her fifties, I think), but man, don't you fuck with her. She is made of steel and she will fuck your shit up. Even sick, exhausted, and underweight. She didn't catch the guy, but she saw where he went and we had plenty of tape to pass along to the cops. I bet we get the guy, and I bet Connie rips out his jugular with her teeth while the police look intently at the ceiling.
And all this happened in the first two hours of my shift. After I myself got to call the cops on a thief last Saturday. Work is fun.
