Apr. 19th, 2005 04:46 pmSo there's a new Pope. While my own personal reaction to this is pretty much limited to, "Dude, the new Pope's name is RATZINGER," this is because I am not Catholic and have never been too religious. If you forced me to choose a religion in a questionaire, I'd put Wicca, but I don't practice and never really have. I don't really have any basis for comparison - I remember very clearly how I felt when Kerry conceded last year, but that doesn't seem to me as though it can even begin to compare to this - and I don't truly understand the personal or practical ramifications of it.
I've been catching up on my friends list, though, and seen some very strong, deeply hurt and angry reactions from some of my Catholic friends. From this I gather that this guy is bad news, and the fact that his appointment has put people in direct conflict with the faith they were raised in - to the point that some are ready to walk away - surprised me a little, and then made me sad. Because this much I do understand now: This is hurting a lot of people.
I am so sorry, you guys. I'm sorry your religion has betrayed you, and I'm sorry some of you feel the need to do this, and I'm sorry it's hurting you so much. I love you all, and I hope you can find some peace and some closure. Also, according to every reasonable doctrine in every religion ever: God loves you no matter what.
