Mar. 8th, 2005 02:48 pmIt's only spring training. It's only spring training. Suddenly I am less sad about not going to New York. Because it's only spring training.
In other news, apparently we are supposed to feel all sad (that's subscribers-only, but the headline kind of says it all) for Jason Giambi and go swimming with him. Whatever. Maybe my opinion on Giambi is a bit influenced by
manderspander's violent hatred of him (because a lifelong friend's passions, positive or negative, can really mess with yours; she is also the reason why I have any interest at all in Jude Law), and I still don't have an opinion on steroids, but all the same: they're against the rules and the law, and he used them anyway. I don't give about the rule-breaking itself, but the getting caught is definitely his problem. (Why yes, I am a Slytherin, how'd you guess?) So his life totally sucks right now. That's because he has to lie in the bed he made. Why the sympathy? He is living with the consequences of his actions. I'm sure he has a support system among his family and friends, and he still gets to frigging play baseball, so there's no need to rally around him just 'cos he's really, really sorry and very, very sad. He'll be fine.
In other other news, it seems as though David Wells and the Red Sox are every bit the perfect fit we've (well, I've) expected. From the Herald:
"Wells raved about the laid-back, jokey atmosphere in the Red Sox clubhouse, a place where the noted fun-lover easily can blend in rather than stand out - a first for him.
"'Everyone's loosey-goosey in this clubhouse,' said Wells, who threw a simulated game yesterday. 'It's a lot different than I imagined it. It's pretty comical to me. New York was reserved, but we had fun. We had characters, but we were a lot more business-like. Here, they like to have fun. They're a bunch of kids.
"'They pretty much have the biggest personalities of all in this clubhouse. You've got "Red Light" (Kevin) Millar over there. He's like the class clown. If you've got any kind of personality, if you're at all outgoing, once your first foot is in the door, they welcome you with open arms.'"
I never thought I'd say this about anything to do with David Wells, 'cos he's not really the type to induce it, but: Awwww.
And while I'm on the subject, I'm reading Wells's autobiography right now. And seriously, I know most of the Red Sox Nation is going, "Shit, we have to root for this guy now?", but I was won over five pages in. He's hardly a perfect author (there's a secondary credit going to one Chris Kreski, so I have no idea how much of the readability can be attributed to who), but he's quite engaging and tells a hell of a story. I'm only, like, a fifth of the way in, so I suppose my feelings are subject to change, but right now I love me some Boomer, and I really wish that shirt had had the right fucking number on it.
