Either way, it's still not as icky as Connor/Cordelia.
Yes, I'm rewatching the fourth season of Angel for the first time since it aired. I cannot express how much I loved this season when it was on. It is amazing. It is ridiculous gothic soap opera crack, with a season-long arc that takes about twelve abrupt left turns and ends up in a place no one could have seen coming. I mean, really: who would have guessed that a giant demon made of rock would have ultimately resulted in scary!Gina Torres wanting to make the world a better place by the simple expedient of destroying free will, with guest appearances from Angelus and Faith, oh and also Angel and Co end up in charge of Wolfram and Hart in the season finale? RIDICULOUS. Oh, god, how I loved it. I knew how insane it all was, and that was why I loved it.
A couple additional helpful factors were these: it came after season three, which was horrible. I loved the show, and I wasn't sure it could recover from how hard it sucked in the third season. I still cringe unhappily when I think of Connor's origins and the exercise in agonizing "humor" that was the episode following his birth. I wasn't expecting much from season four, and when it seemed like the show had gotten back to form of some kind (ie, not sucking), I was hugely relieved. So it already had major extra points from that.
Secondly, toward midseason the WB aired like ten new episodes in a row. Every other show was throwing in reruns, but Angel was new every week. Back when my schedule revolved more around TV, this was a very big deal and I loved having a new episode of something to watch. At one point, there was like a three-week hiatus right before Faith came back. I was not impressed.
So I'm rewatching it, and it's holding up well. It is still ridiculous gothic soap opera crack, and I know the storytelling is questionable and many giant chunks of plot are perhaps not the wisest possible writing choices, but oh my god it is so awesome. I'm so glad. This season mde me really happy when it aired. I would have been sad if it had turned out to be just plain stupid after all.
