Feb. 18th, 2005 04:54 pm"My personal life, anything I do, is none of anyone else's business unless something off the wall happens and you guys are curious."
I officially need a David Wells shirt, plzkthx. <3 Luckily, they already exist at Olympia Sports. Now if I can just find one that's not 2XL . . .
I was psyched when we signed Wells. He may be up there age-wise, but he's a great pitcher, and he's got quite a personality. 'Cause, y'know, it's been kinda bland there in the Red Sox clubhouse. Here's hoping Wells can spice things up. *snerk* Seriously, though - Wells used to pitch for the Yankees, and I remember watching him in the 2003 ALCS not long after I started watching baseball. He cuts a very distinctive figure on the mound, probably because he is a big man (she said kindly), and I associated that image with the Yankees so strongly that, even though he pitched a different team last year, I still went "EWWWW" whenever I saw footage of him. So, I was mildly concerned that recovering from that self-conditioning might be problematic ("Ew - oh, wait, he's ours now. Uhm, yay!"). But, I don't think it'll be an issue.
Choice bits from today's Boston Herald, because why write a real entry when I can just quote the Herald:
* Schilling: "Me not liking Alex Rodriguez is not a groundbreaking story [...] I'm sure Alex could care less whether I like him or not." I hate to slag on your adorable attempts at diplomacy, Schill, but I'm think that if A-Rod didn't care, he'd've kept his mouth shut. A-Rod seems like the type who cares very much about whether he is liked - I can't be the only one who sees a bit of bitterness in the "Red Sox are not supposed to like Yankees" (from here) in regards to Schilling's comments. It's sweet of you to give him that kind of credit, Schill, but I suspect Alex cares very much.
* Wells, perhaps trying a little too hard to fit in (or perhaps not, it's hard to tell) but still making a reasonable point: "[A-Rod] is a five-tool player, one of the best out there. But I remember reading (about) his press conference when he first got there [to the Yankees; clarification mine]. He said 'we,' like he's won three or four rings with them. And that kind of disturbed me. Because I would never put myself in a situation. He shouldn't put himself in that category. You've got to earn it."
(A brief aside - I was on the phone with
manderspander earlier, and we both think that it's hilarious that A-Rod is getting more credit from the Red Sox than he is from the Yankees at this point. I mean, Sox players are at least quick to point out A-Rod's skills as a player before they snark on him; meanwhile, the Yankees's response to said snarking is, "A-Rod? We know no A-Rod." Man, do they hate him.)
* "[Terry Francona] indicated that personal opinions of opposing players - particularly on the Yankees - could become an issue when he has his first meeting with the full squad next week. 'We may have to discuss that a little bit,' Francona acknowledged. 'With this rivalry, there's enough (incentive) there already." Translation: Terry would really like it if Trot, Schill, and Wells would shut it on the A-Rod issue already.
* As for Theo: "I haven't seen (Nixon's) remarks but I'm sure they're just a blip and if they're personal, I think they'll pass . . . I like the on-field Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. I never cared for the off-field stuff, (but) the off-field stuff happens . . . It comes and goes, but the back pages add a lot of substance to it." All those ellipses make me wonder about the context of that last bit. Either Theo secretly digs baseball drama after all, or he thinks that it's the media that needs to shut it. I rather suspect it's the latter.
* And to close, a quote from Randy Johnson about how, even though he's this year's big deal Yankees signing, he has no intention of becoming A-Rod Part II: "So they'll [Red Sox fans; clarification mine] be mad at me if I pitch well against them? Bring it on then [laughing]. So I guess I'm a target. But I'm going to go out there and do the best I can. I'm not going to be firing quotes and stuff like that to make myself more of a target, that's for sure. I'll leave that to other people that can do that better than I probably could." HA. If it weren't for that whole thing where he spazzed on a photographer for daring to photograph him, I'd be favorably impressed. Of course, this time last year I also thought that A-Rod seemed like a pretty classy guy, so that shows what I know.
And yes, I bought that Sports Weekly today. And, since I clearly have no life, I will letcha all know if there is anything of interest in the A-Rod article.
Yeah, I'm just a tad obsessed right now. I just wish he would either comment or publicly refuse to comment on Trot's remarks already, because I AM GETTING ANTSY. I really need something else to think about. I think I'll go order sushi and watch the copy of Harold and Kumar that was due back yesterday *oops*.
