Apr. 8th, 2004 12:17 pmYay, I got to go out to see a movie yesterday! I don't get out to them very often, 'cos I don't drive and the nearest theatre is a town away (and my friends with cars are always either broke or working), so it's kind of exciting to get to one. I saw Secret Window. It was a pretty routine suspense thriller; David Koepp, the screenwriter, obviously stayed real close to his source material, because it had that Stephen King feel to it that all of King's works have. I'm not knocking him, mind you, because I'm from Maine and that sort of thing isn't allowed, but no matter how fabulous and original one of his stories might be, you always know when you're reading Stephen King because his style does not vary. Not that SW has a particularly original story - it's totally predictable until the final fifteen or so minutes, where there's a plot twist that totally rips off one of his novels. And also makes me laugh a lot; for all of the amusing one-liners delivered quirkily by Johnny Depp, I still laughed more at those last fifteen minutes (starting with the excessively atmospheric behind-the-door reveal) than I did during the entire preceding hour and a half. Also, the flick had the kind of score that usually irritates me but this time I appreciated it because it telegraphed each jumpy moment so clearly that I had plenty of warning to become suddenly preoccupied with my soda and thus miss gross things accompanied by scare chords. I hate scare chords. But I love Johnny Depp, who was as wonderful as is to be expected and even managed to make Mort Rainey, a typical Stephen King lead character if ever I saw one, seem damn near unique.
Overall, I had a great time with a corny (those of you who have seen the movie, I beg you to forgive me for that, there's just no other word) thriller and would totally see it again.
