Take this fic, for example. Here's the premise: A boarding house filled with various fictional psychopaths. A crossover of seven fandoms (Johnny the Homicidal Maniac/Willard/Carrie/Donnie Darko/Psycho/Dracula/Intensity), it's pretty much your basic excuse for an ff.net author to be insane for a while. Makes you wanna run screaming, huh?
Well, don't. Because, in spite of itself, this fic is funny, well-written, and in character. I just wanna repeat that last item in capital letters: IN CHARACTER. Here's an author who knows that if she can't find the humour inherent in the characters themselves rather than imposing her own, then there's no reason to be writing this. It actually inspired me to familiarize myself with a couple of the fandoms so I could reread it and get more of the jokes. Try it. Seriously. You won't regret it.
