So, who wants to join me October eighteenth at Myth Haven? Come on, it'll be fun.

So the last couple of days were nice. I got my hair cut v. v. short yesterday; shall hopefully have a pic up tomorrow.

Went shopping today, thus cleverly avoiding television coverage of That Thing, which makes me just as happy because I watched plenty of coverage the day of. I was actively seeking garb for my Myth Haven persona, D'Artagnon. (I tried to tell him that that name is already taken, but he seems to think that the slight deviation in spelling is good enough). D'Artagnon is a pirate (well, he will be, the ship is sailing any day now) who is solidly convinced that he is half-elven and won't hear a word otherwise. I know, I've tried. Never mind that he's average height at best and hopelessly clumsy - he is also highly skilled in the art of self-delusion.

I found him a nice long coat - not quite the Chaucerian pimpcoat I had in mind, but it's still v. good - a pair of shoes (with small heels - D'Artagnon seems to be styling himself after Jack Sparrow and Paul Smecker), and a nice (men's) dress shirt, which means that now I know my dress shirt size should I ever get a chance to return to the men's department for myself. I'm sure he won't mind if I borrow his things from time to time, and he'll have to make do with a pair of my pants - even though everything was on sale, the ensemble wasn't cheap. And we couldn't find a proper hat. We'll have to improvise. And we still need a prop or two and interesting bits and bobs to attach to the coat.

Okay, the schizophrenic bit is done now.

And then this afternoon I watched Chocolat. You know, it's one of those movies that everyone says is good but you don't really wanna see, because you suspect in your heart of hearts that it's really just a glorified chick flick that has somehow become one of those movies that you are required by law to enjoy and praise.

I only bothered because it has Johnny Depp in and was highly recommended.

And it is a quiet little movie, one of those kinds where it starts and you sigh and wait for whatever actor/actress you're watching it for to show up.

Here's my little secret: You have to interest yourself in the characters. It is about these people as much as, if not more so, about the things that happen to them. Give them a chance and they will grab your attention, and then the movie has you by the throat.

I couldn't even get up for a bathroom break. So good. I cried several times, and then cried at the end just because. I laughed plenty too. And I was even able to keep track of all the characters, which is impressive since I have a hard time remembering what people look like, both in life and on the screen. But I always knew which dark-haired woman was which and didn't get lost at all.

Such a satisfying movie. Check it out. Not because You Have To See It And Like It Because It Is An Important Movie Dammit, not because I say so, not even because Johnny Depp is in it. (By the time he showed up, he had become a lovely bonus rather than the main event for me.) Just because it's good, and driven by the characters instead of the plot, and because Juliette Binoche's character does some damn cool things with chocolate.
