Torchwood drabble! Back to the Owen in the recent past 'verse. No spoilers for Torchwood. Kind of obtuse spoilers for the final three-ep arc of Doctor Who's series three.
There's something Owen isn't saying.
That's fine by Jack. He hardly expects every detail from Owen about that trip into the past. He'll get most of it from Ianto eventually, anyway. But this one isn't about disclosure. This is something Owen needs to let go.
Jack dredges up old Time Agent training, time travel and temporal anomalies, and there. He knows what it is.
Oh god, Owen.
He looks into Owen's eyes and says,
"Toclafane."
Owen goes very still, and Jack finds too late that he doesn't want to hear it.

... additionally, I love Ianto more in the last two episodes. Got to admire a man who will grovel to get his girlfriend a proper cyberconversion unit. (Maybe he's been keeping her sedated?)

Ianto makes more sense as a CHARACTER in the last two episodes. I'm just like, "Oh, thank Christ [which, hey, appropriate today, yeah?], I think I've got something to work with now." But I give up on the Lisa thing ever making sense. I hope the writers never try to fix it again, I'd hate to see how they'd manage to make it even worse.

Exactly--he's actually very self-focused, which is interesting, considering how people associate his character with subservience. And Lisa--well. It's Torchwood. We kind of have to throw science, continuity, and character development out the window sometimes.

Ianto is twenty-four (!!!!) and the last two or three years of his life have been hell. Possibly the ONLY thing the writers have done with him that stands out to me is make him self-centered. He's also very smart and has absolutely no qualms about manipulating a situation when he deems it necessary. I think people just think he's
a twelve year old girlsubservient because he keeps ending up in situations that drive him to tears. And Lisa--well. It's Torchwood.
HA. You sound just like me yesterday talking to someone who was disgusted with the idea that baby Ianto could manage to con Jack into hiring him and conveniently not noticing Lisa for a freaking year. All I could say was, "Yeah, I know, but - it's Torchwood. If we want things like consistent characterization and intelligent storytelling, we're gonna have to go somewhere else."
I think I'm just annoyed because this 'verse is requiring me to take that whole story seriously. I have the Rift dumping Owen at three days before "Cyberwoman," and since he's, like, not such a prat anymore (and also now has a tragically dead fiancée), his perception of the Lisa situation is just a tad different and is going to influence how he responds to S1!Ianto. So I'm stuck dealing with it as seriously as anything else I would write fic about, and I kind of hate the writers for doing that to me. So I whine.

Darned writers. What's also interesting is how conscious Ianto is of his own sexual appeal to Jack. Bet he manipulated that about eighteen different ways to keep Jack from discovering Lisa. After all, he seems to be doing that even today with that whole GPS fiasco. (Also, I need to re-watch 'Cyberwoman' to see if it's possible that the all-knowing Jack knew about Lisa and just pretended not to so that he could keep better tabs on Ianto. Because if he didn't know, that's another character inconsistency.)
Finally, Ianto needs to wear street clothes once in a while. They suit him. Pun intended.

There's no doubt in my mind that Ianto used sex to keep Jack occupied and away from Lisa. He knows a thing or two about using every available resource, and sex is pretty much the best possible defense against Jack.
I re-watched "Cyberwoman" a couple of weeks ago, and there is just no way that Jack knew about Lisa. He took the threat she represented very seriously. If he had known, he undoubtedly would have gone down and killed her as soon as he'd found out. So, yeah, Ianto kept her completely secret for a year. Just don't think about it.
That kind of works to my advantage, though, fic-wise, since it implies that Torchwood is gifuckingnormous and makes it waaaay more plausible that Owen could hide out there for months on end without being discovered. The only reason Ianto finds him is because he's going down to see Lisa. Also, it leads to Owen thinking, Hey, if he could hide her, he can hide me. So in that way, it does work in my favor pretty conveniently, I must admit.

I nearly died laughing. 2x12, every guy ends up in a compromising position with Jack. (But then there were proto-Torchwood lesbians!).
Excellent that the Plot-hole of Doom has some use to you--I like your fics better than canon already. ^_~

Yeah, the ep definitely solidified my Jack/Owen shipping. Which, considering that I love Owen and think Jack is a bastard, is hilarious, but UST that sparks more than a certain canon relationship cannot be denied!

Heh. Normally I'd be all "I'm not worthy!", but in Torchwood's case, it's just not that hard to improve on canon. XD

. . . I think I kind of killed the metaphor somewhere in there, but you know what I mean.
