Oh my god, you guys, I've been listening today to this Torchwood audiobook, Hidden (which, can't remember if I commented when I grabbed it, but if I didn't, thanks, Charles!), and it is HORRIBLE. Naoko Mori is reading it, which is nice, but it really goes downhill from there. I must look like an absolute lunatic bursting into giggles on the bus. I am enjoying it tremendously. The only substantial downside is that my tendency to talk to characters does not go away just because I am not looking at an actual physical object, which leads to things like me telling Jack to shut up out of the clear blue while I'm eating my lunch. With any luck, people just think I'm on a cell phone or something.

I am going to have to see about getting more bad books on CD to rip onto my MP3 player. Zoning out to music is getting old. This is so much more entertaining.

So is the story bad, or is it read badly or...?

Naoko's reading is fine, though her Welsh and American accents leave a bit to be desired (her Jack sounds vaguely like a leprechaun, heh). It's the story. It's awful. The plot seems all right so far, more or less what I would expect from a TV tie-in novel, but the purple prose is KILLING me in places and some of the spots of characterization are - well, are causing me to tell Jack to shut up in the middle of a crowded cafeteria. I've read worse as far as TV tie-ins go, but when I'm just reading, I can skim past the badly written stuff. When I'm forced to listen to it, it has to either be hilarious or unbearable. I choose hilarious.
