Okay. After a night's sleep (not necessarily a good one, mind, but at least some sleep), a headstart on my first cup of coffee, and a rare morning cigarette, I feel better.
Losing Nomar is a bitter shock, since he was such a major part of the Red Sox, plus it's been maybe two months since he was able to return to the team after being out for a big chunk of the season with an Achilles injury . . . but. It wasn't for nothing.
It was all part of a big multi-team trade, and we've ended up with two players who have Golden Gloves and are supposed to be excellent defensive players, which is what we desperately need right now. If you separate emotional attachment from the practical matters, we've gained here.
Also, as
watcher_shadow kindly highlighted for me, it's not like we lost him to some useless POS team. He's gone to the Cubs. He'll be playing with another excellent team with a passionate fanbase - the other cursed team, at that. Since this had to happen, at least he's gone somewhere he can be proud to play, and those of us able to catch the odd Cubs game can be proud and relieved to watch him.
Thanks to
watcher_shadow and
j_crew_guy for offering supportive words even though you don't watch baseball; also, thanks to Hoedogg (whose idea it was) and
manderspander for joining me in a toast to Nomar.
One more?
*raises coffee cup*
Cheers, Nomar. May you make friends on your new team and play better than ever and make TPTB at the Red Sox gnash their teeth in bitter regret.
Hey, I didn't say I was one hundred percent over it yet. You'll know I am when my journal layout changes to something a bit less maudlin.

If they had to trade him to any team though, I'm glad the Cubs got him. Unless of course it turns into a Cubs vs. Sox World Series, in which case it might come back to bite Boston in the ass and Nomar will join the ranks of Babe Ruth as one of the players that the team really should have held on to.

You know, that's probably exactly what will happen. Because it just sounds so grimly apropos.

On the plus side, if the Cubs win the World Series that means that the Yankees won't, so we have that to look forward to.
