Oh my god. It's like a million degrees out and someone somewhere in the neighborhood is mowing the lawn. At least I think that's what that sound is, though there isn't a whole lot of lawn to mow in this neighborhood. Maybe someone's finally attending to the grass outside the school across the street.

Anyway, my point is: It is a million degrees. Why would someone do that? Because in an hour it will be two million degrees? Okay, but in the evening it will probably only be half a million degrees. What is so urgent about mowing a lawn that it can't wait until you're less likely to get heatstroke doing it?

(As I type, the sound has ended, so it probably wasn't that, but I need an excuse to post, dammit. Maybe it was just a really small lawn.)

The first thing I did today was crawl into the bathroom for a cold shower. I don't think I've ever done that before in my life. The heat: I do not handle it well. At least I'm not living in any of the places where it's worse.

How hot it is outside: my office is usually the tundra, where I bundle up in sweaters and scarves and sometimes a jacket, and jack my window all the way open to warm it up.

Today, I am sitting here in a short-sleeved sundress with all windows closed and I'm actually a little warm.

AHHHH MAKE IT STOP, CAT.

(Which is to say: I will be in the same boat as you in a few hours. I am seriously considering a local bar. I'm pretty sure half the neighborhood will have the same genius idea, though.)

This website (http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Portland&state=ME&site=GYX&lat=43.6621&lon=-70.256) claims it will be in the low seventies tomorrow. I am skeptical, but let's fantasize, shall we? I hold out some hope because it said seventies a couple days ago, then yesterday it said eighties, but now it's back to seventies. They wouldn't change it back if it weren't true, right? RIGHT?

PS, my roommate thinks the appropriate response to it being even more killingly hot outside than inside is to open the windows. I wonder what it's like on her planet.

... Oh, God. I totally left my bedroom windows open.
