*deep, calming breath*

So. Anyone know of a wireless router I can set up without being REQUIRED TO USE THE DEFUNCT ETHERNET PORT THAT IS THE REASON I AM TRYING TO GO WIRELESS IN THE FIRST GODDAMNED PLACE?

. . . okay, so the calming breath didn't work. I have a perfectly good internet connection that I CANNOT USE and I am TRYING to find a way to deal with this. And it is not LETTING ME. I am so frustrated I could scream.

Well, you need a wireless network card, too, in order to use a wireless router the wireless way. Do you have one of those?

Hmm. I do not. I thought the wireless capability on my computer was enough?

Well, if your computer COMES with wireless availability...? Are the drivers/etc for that set up, so you CAN set up a wireless network? Check your "networks" section and see if there's an option for wireless. I just know I had to have a wireless network card-- with an antenna and everything, so it could pick up the wireless signal.

Yeah, it has all that. It is, in computer years, pretty old (I've had it since January 2006!), but it's not quite that old.

Still, I'm gonna ask a bunch of questions at Best Buy tomorrow. I am seeing things about USB adapters that has me intrigued.

Okiedoke :) Good luck!

Thanks. I think I'm gonna need it.

That was gonna be my suggestion, dude. I've worked w/ (not owned) 2 different PCs that used this little gadget (http://www.buy.com/prod/linksys-wusb54g-wireless-nic-adapter/q/loc/101/10355441.html) successfully. I think it's an expensive bandaid, but I'm sure there are comparable/competitive devices out there. ;)

Ooh, nice. Expensive bandaids are okay; I think I'd have to spend quite a bit more before I'd exceed what it would cost to fix my computer, and since I intend to replace the thing next semester, I'm looking to avoid pouring more money into it. Thanks for the tip!

Um . . . I don't know if you can use this without using their Internet Service, but the BT Home Hub will set up without an ethernet port (I had the same problem, a broken ethernet port but a working wireless card). I'm sure if they will do it, others must too.

Oooh. *Googles* Thanks!

Edit: I wonder if my ISP can do that. I was trying to avoid going through them, but I may not have a choice.
