Okay, I give. Am I, like, bad at being a woman because I didn't give a damn about the Open Source Boobs and I give even less of a damn about the fact that Dean Winchester and Supernatural apparently hate my mom? Because I just - I don't understand. At all. I'm not being facetious, or snarky, or anything like that. I am just completely unmoved and I can't seem to, uh, move myself. I just don't GET it. And I'm afraid to ask, because then ~~people might answer~~ I feel silly. I must be missing some kind of vital social cue here, which I am more less used to, but it never gets less awkward.

(I don't count not being offended by the rampant misogyny in Ghost, because if I started being offended by Ghost I would never stop. Right now I'm more concerned with whether the second part - it's split into three parts - is ever going to develop a plot, or if the inexplicable jumpcuts between fishing and bondage porn is pretty much it. I don't have very high hopes.)

(Edited five minutes and three pages later because WE HAVE ACHIEVED PLOT. Thank fuck. It promises to be stupid plot, but that's not a change. I miss the madcap wackiness of part one and its bin Laden-beheading ways.)

THANK YOU. God. My flist was full of people flipping the fuck out over the Open Source Boobs project, and I was just like, "But . . . it's . . . voluntary? And whether a woman decides to join is her own fucking business and what's with the implication that women who did go for it were automatically victims of a groups of pervs?"

The Supernatural argument I can see more clearly, but I still don't care. Deans gets angry and calls women who have fucked him over unpleasant names. I assume the people who are up in arms over it have never, ever done this, and they know a whole secret cavalcade of insults for women that have nothing to do with their genitalia or sexuality. Because those totally exist in spades and would have been within easy reach of Dean-in-a-temper had he chosen to use them. He just didn't because he clearly hates all women. What?

He doesn't call them any worse than he calls his own brother, or is it okay because Sammy's a big strong man and he can take it?

The only reason I would opt out of the Open Source Boobs project would be because I am INSANELY insecure and I would be too scared nobody would ask to touch my boobs. :(

I would probably opt out because - I don't really want random people touching my boobs. And I am capable of making my own decisions in that respect, no matter what the feminists seem to think.

See, that's the thing, though. There was no obligation on the part of a woman wearing a pin that says "Yes, you may ask" to actually let anyone touch her, if she didn't want them to. It just meant people could ask, and she then had the choice to refuse or consent, as she pleased. I think that's the point that most people missed. They were reading the pins as blanket consent to be groped by anyone with a yen to do so.

EXACTLY. And there would be no damn point to wearing a pin if I knew I was unlikely to actually say yes. That way I wouldn't have to deal with people asking and I would be free to do as I pleased.

It's sad, because something that was meant as a simple, innocent-ish awkward-geek-icebreaker turned into a huge feminist issue because people who are chronically offended often fail reading comprehension.

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused by all of that and why it's so horrible and must be stamped out. Can't the women tell the guys 'no' if they ask to touch her boobs? Is he going to touch them anyway and then run off? I don't get it. And I have 'thoughts' on Dean (and the show) and misogyny but it's too early for me to put them onto computer screen. :P

Well, see, the whole point of the project was that if a girl/woman wasn't wearing a button saying "Yes, you may ask," nobody would even ask her. And even if she was wearing a button that said you could ask, she still had the right to say no. Where things got confused was when they offered buttons that said "No, you may not ask" and people somehow assumed that meant anyone not wearing a button was fair game. At least, that's my understanding of it. Most of the reactions I read were along the lines of, "A WOMAN SHOULDN'T HAVE TO WEAR A BUTTON TO PROTECT HER RIGHT TO SAY NO/NOT TO HAVE CREEPS MOLESTING HER," to which I was like, "...she doesn't. Did you fail reading comprehension?"

Apparently another argument is that women would feel pressured to consent and then be horribly traumatized. Which I'm not saying wouldn't happen in some instances, but what about all the instances where the women would consent of their own free will or just refuse without a problem? What I get out of this argument is that men should never initiate anything ever because a woman nearby might feel pressure of some kind. Which I know is oversimplifying a tad, but Jesus. Many, many women are in fact capable of making their own decisions, thanks.

Basically feminists -- the vocal ones, anyway -- are hypocrites. Women are strong, women are powerful... but we're weak and powerless and the menfolk should just BE NICER TO US OKAY. They shouldn't give us an option to say yes or no as we please, because we're too weak-willed and pitiful to.

I consider myself a feminist, because I'm all for, like, equality between the sexes and shit. But the ones like you just described need to GET OFF MY SIDE.

I'm more interested in getting offended over the real issues, like guys who think that, because I'm a woman, I only watch baseball to look at the players' asses. I'm much more concerned over this than I am over a hypothetical situation or a fictional character's response to women who try to kill him or are demons.

I suppose I'm a feminist, but I've become ashamed to call myself one or consider myself one because of the outrageous, hypocritical behavior displayed by most so-called feminists.

There's equality, and then there's special treatment, and I don't think anyone deserves that, regardless of race, gender, sexual identity, or any other differentiating descriptor one can apply to oneself. No matter who you are, you're not a special snowflake. You're a member of humanity, whether you like it or not, and no one of us deserves better treatment than the other, period.

To all of this I simply say, "Word."
