OMG YES.

Steven Moffat to be new Doctor Who showrunner for series five!

I am SO excited. This is the best ever. I love Steven Moffat. I loved Coupling back in the day, and of course I love the episodes of DW he's done. He is awesome. The show is going to be amazing under his reign. It'll be like, "RTD who?" (Note: any potential pun on show title not intended.)

In other news, I did indeed make it to Borders over the weekend and pick up the first two books of the OH JOHN RINGO NO series, because I couldn't resist an entertainment-related trainwreck if you paid me. I'm about halfway through Ghost, and I wanted to post my thoughts on WHAT IN THE LIVING FUCK AM I READING?!, but there are two problems with this.

A: John Ringo's primary "defense" for Ghost runs along the lines of, "The entire thing is stupid shit! Why are you fixating on that little stupid detail when there are twenty even stupider things you could bitch about?" (My words, not his, but I kind of love him for expressing the sentiment. Dude knows this book sucks.) And he is not wrong. Every time I want to have one little thought about this book, twenty other stupid things come charging into my brain and leave me going, ". . . wait oh my god what?" So this is going to require an essay.

B: I do not have the energy for an essay tonight, because I had insomnia and slept for like two hours and then worked nine. I am so tired I am physically ill and my body hates me for continuing to type.

And I should probably finish it first, anyway. I make no promises, but I will probably have to do some brain vomiting at some point to clear this insanity out of my head, and isn't that was LJ is for?

:: waits hopefully for a review ::

What else was I going to tag it? The name of the series? That would be boring! XD

Oh Cat I can't believe you paid money for those. D:

I know, especially when they can be DLed online for free. But I like my books in book form. And John Ringo has been so incredibly classy about the whole thing that I feel no guilt in adding to his sales numbers.

Of course, I'm glad I already know Ghost isn't exactly representative of his work as a whole, because I wasn't kidding about "wait oh my god what?"

I'm only halfway through the first one, so I can't speak to the rest of the series, and I understand the rest of the books are better anyway. Ghost is - terrible. It's terrible. There are not words. Like, I'm having a blast so far, but it breaks my brain every other page. I would actually recommend it (or at least the first third of it; it's broken up into three sections, and the first had me in more or less constant hysterics), but I have this weird thing where I can't be arsed to get mad over things that piss off like every feminist I know. My response to Open Source Boobs was, "Yeah, and?", which is a SLIGHT contrast to your reaction, and I just hesitate to recommend a book that might give you a stroke. Especially since I haven't finished it yet and the REALLY appalling stuff is still to come.

So . . . yeah. Bad.

It is very possible I might chew the inside of my own face off when faced with a protagonist who has that big a sense of entitlement over getting to sex up women. "HEY I DIDN'T RAPE YOU THEREFORE YOU SHOULD LOVE ME".

In Mike's defense - and I cannot believe I just typed that - he's, like, the only character in the series who is in fact aware of how severely damaged and fucked up he is. He doesn't demand people love him; they just sort of do anyway because Ringo hath decreed that it be so. In fact, there's a bit in the first book where he flat-out tells a woman that he's a layer of self-control away from raping her and every other woman he can get his hands on (and said woman had witnessed many rapes that day already and was set for her turn eventually if Mike hadn't come to the rescue), and she says, basically, that she doesn't believe him and she'd totally trust him to rape her gently or some fucking thing that I didn't read thoroughly because I was laughing too hard. Point being, it isn't Mike's fault he lives in a universe determined to set him up as the Big Damn Hero when he knows perfectly well that he's not. Honestly, I could write an entire essay just on Mike's perception of himself as a bad guy versus the first two parts of the book pushing him as a good guy, and why his actions in the third part could be such a shock to the casual reader. It's some sort of reverse Informed Attribute thing, it's really weird and ineffective.

Of course, all this is based entirely on the first two-thirds of Ghost and what I know of the last third. His attitude could very well change in subsequent books.
