"Supernatural" fic recs

So I've spent much of my winter break watching TV shows and reading fanfic. One of the major offenders has been Supernatural, and it is ridiculous not only how much fanfic there is, but how much of it is good. This fandom may be utterly fucking bugshit crazy, but it has the highest ratio of quality to crap in any large fandom I've ever seen. As a result, I've amassed so many Supernatural fics in my LJ memories that they comprise over half of the total entries in the "fic" section. Winter break is now winding down, so I thought I'd celebrate by passing along my finds. I'm sure some of them will be familiar to those of you who have been in the fandom for a while, but hopefully there's some new stuff in there, too. This doesn't come even close to representing everything I enjoyed, but it's a good sampling.

Uh, and one other thing: it's not all slash. Yeah, I know! Nobody's more surprised, believe me. So I've pulled it all together in categories, because not everything here is everyone's cup of tea, and I've added little snips from each fic. Which I tried to keep work safe when it was relevant, and believe me that was not always easy.

Genfic

* "Grandcars" by [livejournal.com profile] derryderrydown. In which the Impala has knocked up John's truck, and instead of being massively stupid, it's really, really funny.

Sam's already out of bed and throwing his kit into his bag. "Where are we going?"

"Nebraska. Dad's…" Dean has trouble saying it. "Dad thinks his truck's given birth. And my car's the dad."

Give Sam credit, he only gapes for a few moments before he starts thinking about it. "So he's been hit by something that causes hallucinations. Did he say what he was hunting?"

"He was kind of distracted by the baby trucks."

* "School Days" by [livejournal.com profile] derryderrydown, and yes, the repeating authors are going to be a theme here. A picture fic in which one of Dean's teachers is very concerned about his behavior. Funny and cute and full of neat little details.

No copy/pasted text here, because I'm not kidding about it being a picture fic.

* "Shake on Your Luck" by [livejournal.com profile] amchara. A Supernatural/Black Donnellys crossover. It amazes me how well Supernatural crosses over with just about any non-fantasy work. I can't summarize this without giving too much away, so I'll gank [livejournal.com profile] amchara's summary: "A Donnelly, a Winchester and a leprechaun walk into a bar..." This fic has become part of my personal TBD canon, because it makes such perfect sense. Plus, the author does a great job at weaving in the bits from Joey Ice Cream's perspective.

He wasn’t the only one winning big though. That other guy- Dean Winchester, he was more than another pretty face. Yeah- another good looking guy. Good thing I wasn’t at that table too, otherwise the girls might’ve exploded or something. But he was tough too- different from Finn, but you could see that he wasn’t someone you would wanna meet in an alleyway. And a good poker player.

* "One Moment of Knowing That" by [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur. I just plain don't know how to summarize this one. When I first read it, I didn't know what to think, other than that the premise was stupid and a little offputting and I was totally gonna click away. Any second. Really. Except that I didn't, because the author writes it so convincingly that, by the end, it all makes sense and it stops being stupid.

It’s not that Sam didn’t eat before, of course, he ate whatever shit Dean gave him, Lucky Charms and Funyuns and freakin dirt a few times when he was too little to know any better, but when he’s twelve (on his twelfth birthday), he starts to eat. He goes from eleven and ordering fishsticks from the kids’ menu to twelve and eating practically a whole freakin horse at every meal, and Dean kinda stares and Dad makes this weird harrumphing noise like he wants to chew Sam out but can’t figure out what for, but Sam just ignores them both and eats like he’s never gonna have the chance again.

"The Silver and the Glass" by [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur. I'm sure the "Sam came back wrong" angle has been done to death, but, hey, I'm new and this writer kicks ass.

The place is run-down and disgusting, tables sticky and scattered with tiny particles of someone else’s left-over meal. Sam wrinkles his nose, and Dean grins and starts making salt patterns on the table. Dean’s been grinning at him a lot, and there’s something weird about that, too, but Sam can’t figure it out, and he stares at Dean’s fingers swirling and erasing, swirling and erasing, until his eyes hurt and he has to look away.

When he gets back in the car, he finds his hands and the underside of his forearms are peppered with tiny red marks, but he doesn’t figure out what’s weird about that until much, much later.

* "Make Do and Mend" by [livejournal.com profile] kroki_refur. Yeah, after this one, I stopped adding her stuff to my memories because I figured out that if I kept going, almost everything she wrote would end up there. In which Dean doesn't get Sam's literary tastes, but he does figure out the really important stuff.

There's something freakish going on at 113 Maplewood Drive, Fairburn, Tennessee. Sam knows there's something freakish going on because he read about it in the paper, and then at the archives in the local library: three families moving out in two years, reports of furniture moving on its own, kids seeing strange men in the house, adults being pushed down the stairs. Dean knows there's something freakish going on because he's at 113 Maplewood Drive right now, and there's a goddamn ghost getting all up in his face.

* "Rolling in Your Sleep" by [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess. A crossover with Grey's Anatomy. Amazingly, and weirdly, most of the GA crossovers I found did not seem to involve Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character, Denny. Or John, for that matter. But this one does! I memoried this mostly to go back and read it once I've watched JDM's eps in GA, and also because I enjoy the idea of his freaking characters surviving every once in a while, like, could we stop killing him every chance we get? That would be great.

It takes a dozen messages before Denny gets a response, a curt growl on his voicemail demanding to know what he wants.

"I was the one who got your son's heart," Denny says when he calls the man back.

It's a waste of breath to lie, to soften the blow.

* "Bad Fairy" by [livejournal.com profile] vanillafluffy. A Supernatural/House/Burning Zone crossover. This is epically awesome. I've never seen House and I'd never even HEARD of The Burning Zone before I found myself obsessed with intrigued by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but I had no problem whatsoever following this story. Comments from others indicate that [livejournal.com profile] vanillafluffy's characterization of Greg House is as good as her one of John Winchester, and I can only assume the same of Eddie Marcase as well. This fic has so much in it. Well-written characters that are easy for people who aren't familiar with them to understand and follow. A solid, well-paced and clearly-written story that gets complicated but never confuses. Some serious research into medical issues. If you only read one fic on this list, read this one. She put a TON of work and effort into it, and it really shows in the final product.

Children commonly spike fevers; their bodies' thermoregulatory systems are volatile. Most of the time, they're fine again within 24 hours, as if nothing's ever happened. House knows this, but this kid is almost 104F, and he's on the verge of convulsions. His pulse is extremely rapid. That, plus vomiting and diarrhea concerns House.

"Do something!" commands Dad. He fills out a worn plaid flannel shirt with shoulders as broad as a bull's. He's used to being obeyed; the Bunny in the lobby got out of his way with one glare---but House's father was Marine Corps all the way. House doesn't jump when his dad says so, he isn't going to do tricks for this guy either, just his job. "It'll be okay, Sammy," Plaid Flannel says in a completely different tone. "The doctor knows what to do." The Look he turns on House clearly says, Do something, now.

Wincest (with an emphasis on John/Dean, because brothercest just isn't quite fucked-up enough for me)

* "El Camino Real" by [livejournal.com profile] angstslashhope. Sam/Dean, Sam/John/Dean. Demons Made Them Do It. Well, they make Sam and Dean do it. John just gets kind of - caught up. I spent a few hours devouring Hope's fic when I stumbled across it, because I love her writing and the way she presents John/Dean, which is such a tricky pairing to write. Some of the J/D fics I've run across have made me leap for the back button, but Hope really nails it - this is the only one of her pieces I have memoried, but I enjoyed them all. So it's kind of funny that the first fic I memoried doesn't actually have much to do with what I love about this pairing when it's done right, but whatever, the fic is hot.

The feeling in John’s gut is not unlike he’s just been punched. Dean makes a startled, open sound and it turns the sensation of fist impacting into one of a fist gripping, twisting, pulling at John’s insides. Before he realizes it he’s stridden across the room, hauling at the back of Sammy’s shirt, pulling him off Dean like a lioness gripping the ruff of her cub. The two-part whine this results in startles open his grasp, and Sam drops down again bonelessly, body loosening and melding onto Dean’s like he doesn’t even realize John’s there.

* "Four Ways John Winchester Never Touched Dean (And One Way Dean Didn't Touch John)" by, oh look, [livejournal.com profile] derryderrydown. I know this format is kind of a fic cliché by now, but I'm kind of a sucker for it because I like seeing snippets of different ideas. Not all five of these are slashy, and one of them is pretty funny, but my favorite is the last one. It packs a lot into a few words by painting one vivid moment.

The first time it happened, Dean had been eighteen and Dad had given him an almost sympathetic grin and said, "Adrenaline, huh?" That was five years ago and the thin excuse had worn away to nothing long ago.

* "Suck You Dry" by guess who. John/Dean. I originally had this in my memories just because it was late and I was falling asleep trying to read it, so I decided to save it for when I was fully conscious. It really is good, though. Another Demons Made Them Do It, but with more weight to it than your average entry in that category. You'll see what I mean.

The first time John's woken up by Dean's dreams, he thinks it's pretty funny. Dean's lying on his back, moaning like he's got an entire team of cheerleaders crawling over him, and John grins, pulls his pillow over his head and goes back to sleep.

Half an hour later, he's awake again. Dean's thrashing now, sheets twined round his legs and his moans are higher-pitched, more desperate. So John hisses his name and Dean's sitting on the edge of his bed, eyes wide and unfocused.

* "The Dance is Where It's at" by [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess Sam/Dean. This fic deserves credit for being one of the rare Sam/Dean fics to make me buy into the pairing and hold my attention all the way to the end, because, I know I'm in the minority, but I just don't see it. At all. Well, maybe once. But anyway. This is pre-series, pre-Stanford fic in which Dean finds himself getting a little more involved in Sam's burgeoning sex life than he'd meant to be.

So, yeah, there was payment for his brother to lose his goddamn virginity, but it was blood and pain instead of money, and somehow that comes off classier.

* "I'm Not Touching You" by [livejournal.com profile] trollprincess. Sam/Dean. Sam has new telekinetic powers to contend with. Yeah, I know what I just said about this pairing, but this fic isn't for the smut. It's because Dean is awesome in this, funny and well-written, trying to train Sam to get his abilities under control, and because the playful relationship between the two is fun to read. And by the time the sex showed up, I was enjoying myself enough so that I enjoyed that too.

"I'm not seeing any bending."

"I'm trying to be gentle here."

"If you want, we can stop at a Walmart and get something bigger. Maybe a ladle?"

"Shut
up, Dean."

RPS (Jeffrey Dean Morgan/Jensen Ackles all the way, which if you've been paying attention should not surprise you.)

* "Weekend Plan" by Topaz. Here's the thing about Jeffrey Dean Morgan that gets me the most: his voice. And when I decided to give Supernatural RPS fic a whirl, I discovered quickly that I am not the only one. All JDM RPS has a common theme - Jeffrey with a dirty mouth. Usually, dirty talk in smut fic makes me cringe, because it just looks so stupid sitting there in print, but when it's Jeffrey Dean Morgan, I am suddenly okay with it. Anyway. Here we have Jeff and Jensen as established fuck buddies on the verge of becoming something more. This is written from Jeff's perspective, and the delicate way he tries to acknowledge that without acknowledging it adds charm to what is already a sweet and hot fic.

Jensen's wrapped too tight most of the time, but... Jeff's okay with that. He doesn't go into things wanting to change people, make them be something they're not. He's not gonna lie and say he doesn't wish Jensen could go a little easier on himself, but that's for Jen to work out in his own time. Not that Jeff won't take matters into his own hands occasionally, when he thinks Jensen's stretched too thin, when he reaches his own--admittedly not high--threshold of aggravation.

It works the other way around, too. Jensen will only let Jeff slide for so long before he's poking and prodding and getting him all cranked up. Jared claims it's better than a soap opera and has threatened more than once to come over with chips and beer to watch the fun. He grins big when he says it--Jeff's almost sure he's kidding.

* "No Hard Feelings" by [livejournal.com profile] nilchance. Jeff's having a crappy day. Jensen provides an outlet. Featuring my very favorite incarnation of RPS JDM - forceful Jeff. It goes so nicely with the voice, you see.

To Jensen's credit, he didn't smirk. He stepped inside and stood firmly in the circle of Jeff's personal space. There was rain in his hair, on the back of his neck. Up close, Jeff could smell the leather of his coat and a hint of Jared's aftershave.

Jeff nudged the door shut and laid a hand on Jensen's belly, forestalling any pouncing that Jensen might have planned. When Jensen started to reach out, Jeff cleared his throat.

"Problem, Morgan?" Jensen asked mildly, letting his hands drop and hang loose at his sides. Jensen's body under Jeff's hand was strung like tight wire, humming with tension that didn't show on his face.

* "Just Enough Rope" by [livejournal.com profile] nilchance. A kinky companion piece to "No Hard Feelings." This is a little more out there than my usual tastes, so you might wanna read the warnings, but it's so vividly written that the extra stuff works. And well.

Hey. I'll be in LA soon. Want to try something new?

Jensen frowned at his cell phone. The text message was just pixels, stripping away any chance to read Jeff's intentions. He was probably wearing that grin that said Jeff knew exactly how cute he was and how much it let him get away with, but that didn't help explain what kind of 'something' Jeff meant. It could be anything from Jeff bringing over home-brewed absinthe and weed to--

To. Yeah. It had been months since the last time, and Jensen still couldn't smell sandalwood without getting hard.

* "Playing a Role" by [livejournal.com profile] starhawk2005. Ignore the awkward opening. Once this fic gets going, it is crazy hot. Jensen compliments Jeff's portrayal of Demon!John; Jeff gets ideas. BDSM themes, though not quite as advanced as "Just Enough Rope."

He went to the door of his trailer, and saw that it was Jeff, facing away from him, still in his John Winchester costume. “What’s with the knocking, Morg? It’s not like I leave this thing locked. You gettin’ all Miss Manners on me, all of a sudde-“

Jeff turned to face him, smirking wickedly, and Jensen was surprised to see Jeff’s eyes were still yellow. What the-

He didn’t have time to think in depth about it, because Jeff was putting a hand over Jensen’s mouth – loosely, but
still – and backing him up, back into the trailer, pushing Jensen finally back against the trailer wall. Jensen barely noticed the door slamming shut behind them, he was too busy wondering what the Hell was going on.

* And finally, check out [livejournal.com profile] embroiderama's Truth 'Verse, which explores a relationship between Jensen and Jeff that takes them both by surprise, and how they handle that surprise. I love this 'verse; it's well-written and captivating, with fleshed-out characters and drama that never quite goes over the top. The stories range from PG-13 to NC-17, and the character stuff is as compelling as the smut is delicious. The dates of completion on the stories jump around, but the link puts them in chronological order within the universe itself.

This clip is from the first story, "Glimpses."

A PA brought him in, and he shook hands with the boys. Jared smiled widely and clapped him athletically on the shoulder. “Dad! Finally!”

Jensen flashed a grin at his co-star and then turned his serious green eyes on Jeff, reaching out a hand to shake. “Dude, you look like shit.”

“Sorry, we can’t all be pretty boys,” Jeff rasped, unable to completely hide the grimace from the pain in his throat.

“Yeah, right.” Jensen looked like he wanted to say more, but the PA ushered Jeff off to make-up. He sat in the chair running over lines in his head while the nice ladies made him look older and wishing he’d thought to bring cough drops.

(And even a hetfic. I bet you're real surprised by who the guy is.)

"Straight on Through" by [livejournal.com profile] queeniegalore. Of course, because it's me, it's hardly a conventional pairing. This is a filthy John/Jo PWP. Jo's of age, but John seems to view this as more of a legal technicality. Which, he's like thirty years older than she is, so I can't really blame him. There's something about this pairing that I love, but I really couldn't tell you what. It's not the first time I have quietly shipped characters who never shared actual screentime, though, so what the hell.

After that, whenever he came around – not often, maybe two or three times a year – she taunted him, bending over to put his beer on his table, touching his arm, smiling in a way that told him exactly what she wanted. And she knew that he wanted it, too. Maybe he was too good a man to act on it, but she knew. She could feel his eyes linger, see the way he’d lick his lips or hitch in a gasp when she brushed past him. And although wanting him made her feel wrong – he was more than old enough to be her father, had kids who were older than her – she never gave up on the fantasy.

The end. Oh, man. I've never actually looked that closely at my memoried fic before. I think I have issues.
