Hmm. May have spoken too soon in re: malware.

My computer is clean, as far as I can tell (though I could be missing something), but the same address keeps popping up on Avast trying to get back in. Avast is warding it off no problem, but frankly it's annoying and I would like it to go away. I can't tell if it's related to either browser (I've had it pop up once each while using Firefox, which I was using when the whole thing started, and IE, which I am using now; Firefox is off, but I did open it first, if that makes any difference). I know I have a computer expert or two in my f-list - what do I do? ([livejournal.com profile] iarwain, I know we haven't spoken in forever, but I am looking at you in particular here. Please help!) I would prefer to avoid having to take it anywhere, since I have no money, so I want to try whatever I can on my own first before I cave and admit that I lose at owning a computer.

Help?

Run Spybot again... keep doing it till it doesn't find anything.

Let me know how that works. Make sure you have all the updates installed, too. Write down the exact name of the program Avast is stopping. Run regedit and search for the name of that program. Write down the full info in the key and delete it. Find the file it's trying to open and delete that file.

What I ended up doing was going to a friend's house to seek further assistance and possible backup on following your instructions (which were roughly on the level of simple Spanish for me; I understood the general gist, but was shaky on details) and she started by installing Ad Aware and Spyware Blaster on my computer. Ad Aware found a shitload of (rather ominous-looking) stuff that got past Spybot and Avast, and I got that all cleaned out. I've been connected for about half an hour, and had Firefox open for about five minutes, and no knocks on the door yet. *crosses fingers* I'll let you know once I've had things running long enough to be satisfied.

Thanks for your help. I think next time I can afford to go to an event I owe you a drink. Or you can look me up if you end up in Portland for whatever reason, and I can scrape up a few bucks to take you to one of our fine drinking establishments. =)

Aaaaand it's still there. Motherfucker. Off to figure out regedit. If that doesn't work, I give the fuck up and I'm taking this damn thing somewhere tomorrow.

I am very confused. This is too complicated for me. I can't even begin to know if I wrote down the wrong information or what. I think I give up. I know a couple places I can go.
