(no subject)

Must remember the mantra: Always trust Theo. Always trust Theo. Always trust Theo.

And I do. And I can see how this trade is a good move for the team.

I wasn't born yesterday. I know baseball is a business. Hell, I've pointed that out to other people more than once. It's why I wasn't angry at Pedro for leaving the Sox to take the Mets' bigger contract, but rather at the graceless, childish way he did it. It's why I don't hate Damon for taking the bigger contract, but for not shutting the fuck up, and also, the YANKEES. (Note: "Baseball is a business" does not apply when one of your boys goes to the Yankees FARNSWORTH.) Bellhorn got released last year, which sucked, but then so did he, so oh well, because business.

But once in a while, I just cannot reconcile that fact with a baseball move. I understood that the Tigers traded Farnsworth because he refused to sign an extension, and Dombrowski wanted to get something for him while he still could. Did I still spend a solid week cursing and sulking, with frequent outbursts of same for a while thereafter? Yup. Do I feel intensely bitter as I sit here and contemplate the previous sentence? Yup. (Note the second: Man, between the Tigers, the Astros/Braves Marathon of Doom and his crucial role, and the Yankees, my one-sided fan relationship with Farnsworth may be the most complicated fan relationship in all of baseball. Rooting for multiple teams will do that.)

Do I understand the advantages of snagging young Wily Mo? Do I realize that we haven't really hurt our pitching depth all that much? Do I, like most of the Red Sox Nation, enjoy saying Wily Mo's name and the fact that it's not pronounced like it's spelled? Yup, yup, and god yes. Do I still hate this move? Does my heart break for Arroyo and his sweet loyal optimism in taking that hometown discount, declaring his love for Boston, and getting totally shafted? Am I having to remind myself rather forcefully that baseball is a business and loyalty is not lucrative? Yes, yes, and 'fraid so.

Bronson, please go on to have a fucking killer season (except against my 'Stros, thx). Even though you can't make your career in Boston like you wanted, maybe you could make a damn fine one in Cincinatti.

Just think, our outfield has 3 of the greatest current baseball names out there. Coco Crisp, Wily Mo Pena, and Trot Nixon. Now that's le awesome!
