my mom heard Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time 4 years ago. (she's only slightly older than your roomie). She doesn't like a lot of rock but she loved it and I kind of gave her a mini-history of glam rock and explained to her that she probably found it appealing because of its theatrical qualities (my mom loves Broadway musicals)
