Welllll... sort of. Crispin doesn't like to talk about it, obviously, since his not returning for the second movie prompted the subsequent lawsuit over the uncredited (and unpaid) use of his image. But Crispin did note in his interview with Stuff magazine that all of the other returning actors were set to make about twice as much as he would have. There have also been a few rumors about him being difficult to work with (probably fairly true, though not to the extent that most like to take it to... there haven't been a ton of complaints from other filmmakers, after all) and rumors about him wanting to avoid being typecast as a geek--something he felt returning as George McFly for the following two movies would do, I guess. All in all, it was probably a combination of things. But it's like the Letterman interview... we'll never know quite what was going on in his head because he ain't tellin'.
I've also heard that, because he chose not to return, they had to (obviously) drastically reduce the part he was set to play. Which is disappointing... I do always wonder what we missed, beyond father-son reunions.
Dear god, I think about this far too much...
And after the holidays, I am totally taking myself to Amazon and buying used copies of some of those indie films.
*recommends Bartleby... and Rubin and Ed if you can find it*
