Yes. Exactly. Of course, the fault with this doesn't entirely lie with fandom - TW's writers like to try and play with it, then backpedal and insist that Jack Is Always Right. I think the only time he's ever canonically been called out is in "Small Worlds" when he gives Jasmine to the fairies, and that's just about the only time he doesn't need a smack over the head, because all he's done is choose the lesser of two evils. Compare that to, say, "Day One" (just to choose another early example), where he allows Carys to leave, thus killing off another another dozen innocent people, rather than sacrifice the Doctor's hand. Which, fine, that's a completely IC and interesting choice for him to make, except then the episode lays all the blame at Gwen's feet for having bad aim.

And don't even get me started on Owen in either series, or we will be here all day.

- so, yeah. Part of it is the flaws in canon being reflected in fandom - bad writing begetting bad writing. And it is a crying shame because Jack could be one of the most wonderfully fascinating characters on television, but the writers just won't or can't go there.
