I was surprised by how well the verses fit together once I'd found the right angle for it. I'm really happy other people are finding it convincing. And yes, I took a lot of pains with writing the Comedian and stepped very carefully with his responses to John. (His reaction to John's tears is, in my head, actually pretty funny - he somehow did not expect that at all and hadn't the first clue on how to deal with it, so it was pretty much, ". . . yeah, you get on with that, I'll just be over here.")
