I found a zombiefic prompt challenge over at
juleskicks's LJ, courtesy of a link from
j_crew_guy. I'm posting about it partly because it's gotten no love and there are some interesting prompts, so people should go check it out, and partly because I ended up writing my first piece of non-RPF in like two years for it.
The challenge: Doctor Who/Firefly crossover: Saffron/Rose Tyler, deceit. I just couldn't resist.
I just started watching Doctor Who (I'm up to the second episode in series two), and I haven't seen Firefly for some time, so I'm not sure about the characterizations here. Any thoughts on that from fans of either show would be appreciated.
"What are you doing?" Rose Tyler swatted the other woman away, staring incredulously. Saffron scowled.
"Homophobia is so twenty-second century."
"It's not like that! Just I think we've got bigger problems right now than your libido!" The door was creaking ominously now with each blow that fell from the other side of it, and it wasn't that Rose was unfamiliar with desperate, last-ditch, no-hope situations. It was just that when she was in them, the Doctor was usually in them as well, or right outside them working to make them go away. But the last she'd seen of him was him hollering as she'd fallen out of that little spaceship, which had then flown away. She hardly discounted the probability that he was working on the problem from the ship, but, well. That was far away. Relatively speaking.
And the zombies were not.
"Right, then," she said, tightening her grip on the solid length of pipe in her right hand. She didn't continue, because what was there to say? Nice knowing you? Make sure to swing real hard? I bet getting eaten alive really hurts?
"Oh, for gods' sake," Saffron said. She grabbed Rose by the shoulders and swung her around to face Saffron, back to the door. "Here's a little something to remember me by."
Rose only heard the first few words, though; the rest were drowned out by the deafening crash of the roof being torn open. Both women looked up, agape.
The Firefly hovered just above them, with the Doctor and Captain Reynolds looking down through the open hatch. Each dropped a rope down, yelling something along the lines of, "Grab on!"
Not that they needed to be told. Rose grabbed the Doctor's rope and Saffron took the Captain's just as the door gave way, along with substantial chunks of the wall, and zombies came pouring in.
"GO, GO!" Captain Reynolds hollered. The ship began to rise, the women dangling from their ropes. Rose just had time to kick at a zombie with designs on her ankle and they were off, the remains of the small shed dwindling away behind them.
The men braced themselves and hauled their ropes up. Rose grabbed the Doctor's outstretched hand as soon as she was able and he launched himself backward, ending up with the both of them in a relieved pile on the floor. Rose smiled giddily down at the Doctor.
"You know, I've about had enough of these close calls. Of all the people in the universe, I'd think your timing would be a bit more comfortable."
"Yeah, but you're a lot happier to see me this way," he pointed out, and she laughed and got to her feet.
The reunion a few feet away was rather less amicable. Saffron and Captain Reynolds were glaring at each other, each with the posture of one who couldn't decide whether to attack or prepare to be attacked.
"You were going to kiss her, weren't you?"
The Doctor glanced over at Rose. "What?"
"I think she's a little gay," Rose explained.
"If only," Captain Reynolds said darkly. To Saffron, "You've got that knockout juice on, haven't you?" Her silent glare was enough answer. "You were gonna knock that girl out and use her to distract 'em so you could escape."
"I'd be fool not to try."
"Wait, what?" Rose interrupted, but the Doctor was nodding along.
"Serum in the lipstick, right?" Saffron gave a surly assent and the Doctor grinned. "Fantastic."
