That Tigers game was tremendously satisfying. Maybe it was just because it was two and a half hours of shiny joy in the midst of a day of sludgy suck, but that was the most I've enjoyed watching a game in some time. (And, Jesus, judging from what I've seen on NESN while I work on this post, I picked the right game to watch. Ouch.)
It helped, of course, that it was against the Yankees. And the Yankees sucked. And that I've been looking forward to the Bonderman vs Johnson matchup since I worked out the rotations and figured out it was happening several days ago. And that, frankly, that matchup played out about how I thought it would. Bondo's been consistently good this year (we are ignoring that last start, kthx), and Johnson's been spotty and unlike his legacy even at his best. The twenty-two year old kid against the living legend may seem unfair, and it was. It was just unfair in the opposite direction. Bonderman got a complete game - his second in three starts, by the way, and I wonder if his short outing last time didn't help out this time - and his tenth win, and Johnson gave up seven earned runs in five innings and got his sixth loss.
Have I mentioned lately how much I love Jeremy Bonderman? I am eternally grateful to the Tigers fans who got me sucked into this team, because he is just such a joy to watch. It's astounding to think how, if he's this good now, he's just going to be incredible, one of the greats, and it's so exciting to watch the beginning of that.
Okay, enough about the pitching, because we love the offense too! So much happened that it gets bullet points (well, asterisks), and hell, I'll even throw in a mention of the one bright spot for the Yankees' offense because I'm nice that way.
* Chris Shelton. This kid is unreal. He just keeps hitting and hitting and hitting. Today he got a two-run homer. And not only did he do that, but he did it to bring the Tigers ahead from 1-1 to 3-1, AND he did it in his very first at-bat against Randy Johnson. How cool is that for him?
* Placido Polanco, and again with the hitting and hitting and hitting. He got five RBI, which is his personal best. They came on a sac fly, a double, and oh yeah, a three-run homer.
* Magglio OrdoƱez! Didn't really know what to expect, since he hasn't played a whole lot for like a year, but he got his first hit as a Tiger. And it was a two-run homer. Not a bad way to come back, Mags. (Also, please don't cut your hair or anything, because it's wicked cute all curly and tously like that.)
* And to conclude the story of the homeruns, Hideki Matsui got a solo shot. See, I told you I'm nice.
There was also lovely defense, and the Tigers got like three double plays, and Nook and Inge each stole a hit or two away from the Yankees.
Final score: 10-2 Tigers. Now that is how we recover from being swept.
The Astros game is currently 10-4 Astros in the eighth, so it looks like Pettitte did well for himself (it's been way too long since I've watched one of his starts, I've got to do something about that), and the current score for the Red Sox is WTF IS THAT SHIT ON MY SCREEN I DO NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT. Wow, guys. I definitely made the right viewing choice tonight.
