Whoops. I promised petty, vindictive, suck-it-Princess fic, didn't I? But then I got drunk distracted and forgot to post it. I'm not feeling especially vindictive anymore, but I wasted the receipt tape and all, so here it is. Like the Tigers ficlet, is it sans header 'cos it's too short to bother.

NOTE THE FIRST: Takes place in the same universe as "Clown" and "Looking." Obviously the night of the Most Annoying Game Ever.
NOTE THE SECOND: Disclaimer. Fiction. I'll take a crazy leap and assume that maybe, just maybe, A-Rod was in a pretty good mood after the game, but everything else in here I made up. I am making no implications about anyone mentioned in this fic. Please not to be suing for libel, kthx.

After the game, Alex is flying high. Ten RBI on four hits, that's amazing enough, but coming after the way he's been playing lately - there are just no words. No words. He thinks he may have babbled something about clouds to the media, but he can't remember.

And now, Derek is talking to him. Derek, excited and congratulatory in the dugout, patting him and beaming at him, is talking to him now in the locker room, warm and friendly and smiling, like Game Six and spring training and the chill of April never happened. This beats a million RBI, and Alex is glowing and grinning like an idiot as he tries to listen to Derek and hopes he won't give away the real reason why he is so happy.

He will, he decides, ask Derek to go out for drinks, because this is how it goes. It's how the story gets told. He's made up for Game Six and now he'll ask Derek and Derek will say yes and they'll go out and drink and then go home and spend the night trying to make up for all the time they've lost since October.

He's opening his mouth to speak when Tino comes up. He flicks a look at Alex - lighning-quick, Alex just barely sees it and he knows Derek doesn't - then slings an arms around Derek's shoulders and drops a kiss on his temple. "Ready, babe?"

And Alex quails just a little, he'll admit it, but then Derek raises an eyebrow and mouths, "Babe?", which is pretty funny, so Alex gets ready to shoot a triumphant smirk at Tino. Because tonight is his night and Tino won't be getting in the way of that.

"Yeah," Derek says. "See you tomorrow, Alex," and Tino may or may not smirk, Alex doesn't know, because they're gone before he's quite caught up with the change in the tide.

He does go out, and drinks everything everyone buys for him. He thinks about the game, and he can hear it, the ball on his bat and the crowd screaming, but all he can see is Derek walking away with Tino. And when he reaches for that high, he can't find it anymore.
